Sex, Religion, And Politics (Part 2)

Apr 22, 2011 in Headline, News, Other

I’ve noticed from comments here and other sites that some of our hard core fans don’t understand why we make so many sexy comedies like BARELY LEGAL (pictured).

I can explain it with two words.

The first word is “Relief.”

After making three or four giant seafood/end-of-the-world/alien invasion films in a row we are bleeding cash and our visual effects team is ready to kill us. Sexy comedies (and horror films) are inexpensive and don’t require name actors and the monsters that eat them, so we all get a break and a chance to save money.

Speaking of which… the other word is “Profit.”

When we make a movie we generally shoot for profits of around 20%, but with some of our sexy comedies the margins can be 50% or even higher.

With returns like those, I sometimes think we should fire everyone in VFX and do nothing but sexy comedies.

But then I remember all of those guns.

I’m kidding, Inmates, we’re never going to stop making  huge reptile/apocalyptic/doomed mass-transit films… Because 20% profit on a film that costs $1 million is still better than 100% on one that cost $100,000.

And you thought one of the words was going to be “Boobies…”

In Defense of Mockbusters

Apr 14, 2011 in Headline, News, Other

One of the most frequent (and false) criticisms we hear is that our business model is based on “fooling people” into watching our movies.

Not only has that never been our intention, but it also just doesn’t happen.

Both Blockbuster and Hollywood Video provided us with detailed monthly reports on all of the transactional data on our movies, and the returns (customers asking for their money back) were consistently less than 1%. If consumers were really picking up Pirates of Treasure Island and thinking it was that other pirate film, the returns would have been astronomical.

Most people aren’t that dumb.

I think Mockbusters are like store brands. Say you’ve got a cold and you walk into your local Walgreens  for some medicine (and a pap smear). You see the Sudafed, and right next to it, in a box that looks remarkably similar to the national brand, the store’s own “Nasal Decongestant.” I don’t think most people buy the store brand because they think it’s really Sudafed in a different box. I think they buy it because they think it will be similar to Sudafed, only cheaper.

Just like our Mockbusters. They’re similar to big studio films, only cheaper.

And shittier.

If that’s possible.

Save MEGA SHARK!

Apr 08, 2011 in Headline, News, Other

Syfy is running a contest based on some sort of athletic competition (I know nothing about such things. I was born without the sports gene) called Saturday Monster Madness.

Our beloved MEGA SHARK handily defeated Snakehead, Frankenfish, and Mega Snake in the first and second rounds, but is now struggling against Dinoshark.

I am asking everyone to go to the site and vote for MEGA SHARK while there’s still time!

What’s It Worth?

Apr 07, 2011 in Headline, News, Other

We often boast that The Asylum has never lost money on a movie (although we’ve certainly come close ).

As I’ve talked about (ad nauseum), this is partly because we never make a movie without knowing where we’re going to sell it. But it’s also because we try never to make a movie that costs more than it’s worth.

When I first started working at The Asylum, I quickly became aware of Two Truths: The First, that if we spent more money on our films, they might be better movies, and; The Second, that if we spent more money on our films, we’d probably never get it back.

Genre films have a certain value in the marketplace, and just because you spend more money on them doesn’t necessarily make them any more valuable.

As we’ve moved more into television, our budgets have certainly increased (VFX sharks and ’80′s TV actors aren’t free, you know…), and our biggest challenge has been making sure we don’t spend more than we can bring in.

Our two biggest budget films cost around $2 million. MEGAFAULT worked out because disaster movies sell everywhere in the world. But we’re probably only going to break even with MEGA PYTHON VS GATOROID, because giant creature movies only work in certain territories.

Interestingly, 100 MILLION BC, MEGA PIRANHA, and BATTLE OF LOS ANGELES also premiered on Syfy with comparable ratings… and these films cost less than a quarter of the budget of the other two.

In other words, more expensive doesn’t always mean better.

Mega Python News

Apr 06, 2011 in Headline, News, Releases

As you probably know, we almost always distribute our films through our own video label, but occassionally we decide that a particular movie can be better served by letting another company release it.

We are very excited to announce that Image Entertainment will be releasing MEGA PYTHON VS GATOROID on DVD and Blu-Ray on June 21, 2011.

In the meantime, you can finally watch our Official Trailer here.
